SD1 budget and sanitary rate adjustment approved

05/19/2017 - The judges executive for Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties voted unanimously Friday, May 19 to approve SD1's Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 budget recommended to them by SD1's Board of Directors. The budget addresses necessary improvements to the aging sanitary sewer system; federal requirements to reduce sewer overflows and improve water quality; and community issues ranging from basement backups to sewer capacity.

The budget includes a 5 percent increase in the sanitary sewer service fees charged to customers for FY 2018. Residential customers will see an average monthly increase of $2.16, or $0.36 per hundred cubic feet (HCF) of water usage, on their SD1 bills for sanitary sewer service. The rate adjustment will be reflected on customer bills beginning in August 2017.

SD1’s sanitary sewer service fee for FY 2017 was $7.37 for every HCF, or 748 gallons, of water used. The 5 percent increase will result in an FY 2018 sanitary sewer service fee of $7.73 per HCF. Under the budget, SD1’s storm water fee will remain at the current $5.04 per month in the coming FY 2018.

“This limited sanitary sewer rate increase will help us balance our service area’s diverse needs over the next year. However, we know we have enormous hurdles ahead in our continuing effort to fulfill our mission to protect public health, property and the environment and to support the community’s economic vitality,” said SD1 Executive Director Adam Chaney. “As a result, we are working to establish an extended timeline for meeting federal clean water requirements. If granted, this extension will help SD1 achieve its overall goal of keeping rates affordable without sacrificing service.”

As the wastewater and storm water utility for Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties, SD1 is responsible for the collection and treatment of the community’s wastewater and the management of the community’s storm water. In carrying out these responsibilities, SD1 must continuously invest in the public sewer system to protect the health of its customers and the environment.
